Coffee Producers - King's Royal Thai Project, Akha Ama

There has been a boom in coffee production in northern Thailand over the past decade. A large reason for this is a result of the support and assistance from the Royal Thai Projects that encouraged hill tribes to turn away from growing opium and other narcotics and begin growing coffee as a cash crop. In the area known as the Golden Triangle you are now more likely to find coffee beans than any narcotics.

Some of the most famous areas for coffee production in Northern Thailand are Doi Tung, Doi Chang, Doi Wawee and Doi Kham, in case you are wondering Doi is northern dialect for mountain.

The Royal Project Foundation was initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej to improve the livelihoods of Thai highland communities replacing opium for the fruits, coffee, and vegetables.
